How does Invisalign work?

Many people are attracted to Invisalign due to it being a comfortable and virtually invisible alternative to traditional braces and retainers. However, one question we’re asked often here at MiSmile is “how does Invisalign work?”

The difference between Invisalign and normal braces

Normal braces work by applying constant pressure to the teeth in order to gradually move them into a new position. Brackets are bonded directly to each tooth and a thin metal wire runs from bracket to bracket. Springs and rubber bands are sometimes used to apply more pressure in certain directions to correct teeth that need to move more than others. Over time, dentists tighten the metal wire in order to maintain pressure on the teeth as they move.

With Invisalign, patients are given a series of aligners, each slightly different, which in a similar way to braces apply pressure to the teeth to cause them to gradually move. However, there are no unsightly and uncomfortable brackets or wires, and the aligner is replaced every week to keep the pressure constant without the need for tightening wires. Plus, Invisalign can be removed to eat and brush teeth in order to keep staining, plaque build up and tooth decay to a minimum.

A series of aligners

The innovative Invisalign aligners, which are made from a unique thermoplastic, are worn in a series and replaced on a weekly basis. The aligners are custom made to fit each individual patient’s mouth, and designed to shift the teeth in a sequence according to the precise movements that the dentist plans.

When you place your first Invisalign aligner over your teeth you’ll probably notice a feeling of pressure. The aligner has been specially sculpted to apply controlled pressure to certain teeth to move them in the correct direction. The teeth will gently move over the one week period and you’ll notice the pressure eases. It is then time to replace the aligner with a new one, which is a slightly different shape, in order to apply controlled pressure to the teeth once again. This process continues for as long as your treatment plan requires, with the result being beautifully straight teeth with minimal discomfort throughout the process.

A custom treatment plan

Every patient who chooses the MiSmile Network for their Invisalign treatment will be given a thorough examination by an orthodontist, who will then create a custom treatment plan. Our specialists have a great deal of expertise in dentistry and the Invisalign process, and will map out a movement plan to establish exactly how much each tooth must move to create a perfect smile. It is this plan that establishes the shape of the series of unique aligners, which are then custom made.

With treatment plans starting from just Β£28 per month, Invisalign is a fantastic investment when you consider the advanced technology it uses and the level of expertise you’ll receive from MiSmile specialists.
