To floss or not to floss, that is the question.

In 2016, the US health department dropped their daily flossing recommendation. The US investigation that found no proof that flossing prevents gum disease, so we’re taking a look at a way that you can prevent gum disease - interdental brushes, to get food and plaque from in between your teeth.

What are interdental brushes?

Interdental brushes are small brushes with bristled heads that are designed to clean between your teeth to remove small bits of food and plaque. Different sized brushes are available and some people may prefer smaller or larger brushes, depending on the gaps between their teeth.

How do you use interdental brushes?

You should ask your dentist for advice on the size of brush that is suitable for your teeth, to ensure you don’t damage your teeth. Gently insert the brush between your teeth, without forcing it into the space. You could create a regular pattern of movements, so you never miss out any of your teeth while you’re brushing.

Where can you get interdental brushes?

Interdental brushes are available from high street pharmacies and independent pharmacies. If you’re not sure where you can get interdental brushes that suit you and your teeth, ask your dentist for recommendations. They may be able to tell you where you can find them or be able to provide you with them.

Whether you choose to floss or use interdental brushes, it’s vital that you look after your teeth and try to prevent a buildup of plaque. Keeping your teeth, tongue and mouth in good condition is the best way to prevent gum disease and infections.
