Mikehughes nanogpic Dentistry By Mike

Mike, a fluent Welsh speaker, originally from Penygroes, Caernarfon, graduated with merit from Cardiff Dental School in summer of 2004. He moved back up to North Wales to undertake vocational training in Penrhyndeudraeth, Porthmadog, and work there for 2 years. In 2006, he took up a Senior House Officer (SHO) post in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery departments in all of the four local hospitals in Bangor, Glan Clwyd, Llandudno and Wrexham. During this time he passed his examination to gain membership of the prestigious Dental Faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. In his hospital job he gained valuable experience in dealing with facial trauma, skin cancers, difficult extractions and assisting with the surgical and medical management of patients who had head and neck cancers under the direct supervision of the Consultants.

In 2007 he returned to general practice and worked part time with Dr Graham Roy, a well known local Implantologist in Menai Bridge, devoting one day a week with Mr Roy as his implant assistant where he saw many intricate surgical procedures and has been mentored in house by Mr Roy in the field of Implantology. He has since retired. Mike took over the Directors role of the ITI (International Team for Implantology) Study Club for Anglesey and North Wales 7 years ago from Mr Roy. Through this world-wide organisation, based in Switzerland, he invites renowned speakers to North Wales to the study club, and being a registered ITI speaker, lectures frequently to local dentists on implant treatment planning in an informal forum.

In 2019 Mike became an ITI Fellow, through a strict process, and is the first and only Welsh speaking ITI Fellow in the world. In late 2021, there are 73 ITI Fellows in the UK, with a membership of 1068, and 1450 Fellows worldwide out 18,000 ITI members.

He has also lectured numerous times at the Welsh Language Dental Society Annual Conferences. Mike has a certificate in Endodontics (root canal) from the University of Chester (2008) and has a Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons which he completed in 2010. He is an approved Invisalign provider (2009) using clear almost invisible braces to move teeth and he is also a Six Month Smiles provider, using fixed orthodontics. He is a member of the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.

In 2013 he was rewarded with a Masters of Science Degree (MSc) in Clinical Restorative Dentistry from the University of Leeds. His thesis was based on periodontal disease (gum disease) and the evidence for the use of “full mouth disinfection” in treating gum disease in primary dental care. He is also very experienced at taking cone beam CT (3D) scans, and uses them weekly as part of his implant planning, and takes them for other colleagues. Mike has been lucky previously to win “Best Young Dentist South West and Wales” in 2010, 2011 and 2012 at the Dentistry Awards.

He also worked in a private practice in St Helens, Liverpool, from February 2016 to May 2018, where he was placing implants and treating periodontal disease. He was the Lead Clinician at the Menai Bridge Dental Practice, Anglesey, where he had been working for nearly 14 years, but moved on in May 2021. Mike has also lectured locally at the Menai Study Club, as well as on local dental courses and for the Welsh Language Dental Society. He was an invited speaker at the Caribbean Dental Program in Barbados in 2013, and was supposed to return 2020, but Covid-19 changed his plans. In June 2016 was invited to lecture in Porto Alegre, Brazil on the topic of Advanced Treatment Planning. In 2020 he had a clinical poster accepted for the ITI World Conference in Singapore on the successful management of peri-implantitis.

His main lecture interests are advanced restorative dentistry with splitting treatment into more manageable phases, treatment planning sequencing, and using multidisciplinary approach on teeth and implants. In 2014 Mike was awarded a fellowship of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners (FFGDP) from the Royal College of Surgeon of England. Mike has also been a faculty member of Geistlich Biomaterials Company, supporting them numerous times with their symposiums in London on their advanced bone grafting courses. He has published articles in the dental press a few times recently and has published a few scientific articles published in dental journals. In 2019 he started his own dental education company called Stride Dental Academy with a colleague. In Sept 2021, he opened his long awaited specialist led “Menai Dental Implant Centre” with its sister practice “Deintyddfa Na-Nóg Dental & Implant Team” in Parc Menai, Bangor where he receives referrals for complex dentistry from all over North and Mid Wales.

To date Mike has placed and restored over 500 dental implants, and takes referrals for Implantology, Periodontics, and Advanced Restorative Dentistry. He also provides sinus bone grafting and block bone grafting, as well as treatment for failing dental implants, either to keep them or remove them.
